Neuromuscular Reprogramming

Melbourne Voice Therapy specialises in neuromuscular reprogramming (NMR) which is an approach to improving speech and singing performance through changing the neural pathways and muscle movements involved in these activities. The goal of NMR is to achieve greater control and efficiency in speech and singing, resulting in improved vocal quality, range, stamina, fluency, and overall performance. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to adapt and change in response to experience, and this includes the development of new neural connections and pathways. NMR techniques may include exercises that focus on specific muscle groups, re-training the way that the brain coordinates movements, and sensory feedback training.

The left and right hemispheres of the brain have different specializations, but both are involved in singing and speech. The left brain is responsible for language processing and analysis, while the right brain is responsible for processing rhythm and melody. Therefore, when singing, both hemispheres work together to coordinate the lyrics and melody. When speaking, the left brain processes the words and the right brain helps to add emotional expression to the speech. Imbalance can be improved by better integrating both hemispheres more effectively.

With practice, training and proper guidance, new healthy and efficient phonation habits begin to form and develop.
